Celebrating Longstanding Partnership with Stepping Stone of San Diego
On March 19, Bixi Craig on behalf of Lavender Lens received the “Health Hero 2009” award, distributed by Combined Health Services. The recognition is granted by member organization Stepping Stone of San Diego, the recovery service specifically designed for the LGBT community.
Combined Health Services is the workplace funding partner of United Way, representing 25 of San Diego’s most influential non-profit hospitals and health care providers. The agency awards individuals that represent Health Service Providers and Media Outlets that have substantially improved the health of San Diegans.
Lavender Lens’ coverage over the years of women’s preventative care, well-being, latest research in women’s health, fitness, drug-and alcohol recovery, and mental health has made a significant difference in the lives of San Diego women. “This is an accomplishment of all writers who have contributed to the extensive health related coverage we have maintained in Lavender Lens over the years,” said honoree Bixi Craig, publisher of Lavender Lens. Stepping Stone of San Diego nominated Lavender Lens for the nomination.
Craig has been partnering with Stepping Stone for several years, having served on the Women’s Committee, the Marketing Committee, and as a consultant and sponsor.
Despite the economic challenges of the time, Stepping Stone Board Members organized a benefit in early March that raised more than $6,000 for needed services. On a separate recent occasion, about 250 friends of Stepping Stone gathered at The Center to acknowledge the success of 75 graduates who had completed the program in 2008. Michele Loo, a graduate and former staff person gave the keynote address and wowed the audience with her inspirational messages. City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez endorsed the importance of the organization to the LGBT community, and presented a
check to the Stepping Stone Alumni Association to assist the family of a graduate who had recently passed away.
