Stepping Stone operates both a residential and a non-residential recovery program, each based upon a social model of recovery, to meet the different needs of our clients. Our programs rely on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous* and utilize peer interaction and involvement, creating a social environment where clients help each other in the recovery process.  To find out more about our screening and admissions procedure, click here.

Residential: Our primary residential program is located in our award-winning 31-bed, six month residential facility designed to provide a healthy, safe and supportive environment for individuals whose needs are best addressed in a residential treatment setting. The residential program combines a daily way of life practiced in supportive recovery with the expertise and experience of professional counselors and volunteers. Days are structured with workshops, support groups, basic living skills as well as recreational opportunities.  More about residential services.

Outpatient treatment services: The Hillcrest Outpatient Center is a structured recovery program that provides an inviting social environment combined with a full program of services including Twelve Step meetings, workshops, educational classes and community referrals. The services are overseen by an experienced and supportive staff. More about Outpatient Treatment Services.

Prop 36: This program, created following the passage of Proposition 36 by voters, provides first and second time drug offenders who are not violent with treatment services as an option to incarceration. This program includes educational, process-oriented, bi-weekly counseling and support services and is located at our Hillcrest Outpatient Center.

The Support Services Program was implemented in 1996 to provide alcohol and drug recovery services to people living with HIV/AIDS in the North, Central, Southeast, East and South Bay regions of San Diego County.  In order to intervene and facilitate the recovery process it is essential to address HIV/AIDS and substance use and abuse simultaneously.  We have two HIV Prevention Programs, one targeting issues relating to IDU populations and another targeting MSM communities.  More about Support Services.

Sober Living:  Stepping Stone operates two sober living homes that provide housing to individuals recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. Both projects are HUD subsidized. One project is a Shelter Plus Care housing program while the other is a HOPWA funded program providing transitional sober living housing for individuals who are also living with HIV.

Aftercare: After transitioning out of the core residential program all graduates are required to attend three to six months of Aftercare before graduation.  This consists of one aftercare group per week as well as on-going attendance in self-help meetings. Also Stepping Stone has an active Alumni Association which former program participants are encouraged to utilize and an opportunity for on-going fellowship, support and service.

Stepping Stone believes that individuals and families experience long-term recovery by:
1. Participating in all three phases of recovery services
2. Establishing and maintaining a peer, support group of clean and sober friends
3. Integrating into a personal belief system the lessons learned in the process of doing (1) and(2)

Harm reduction is a door into sobriety, not a door out. Unfortunately, there are not enough treatment beds to meet the needs of the drug users who are still suffering. With empathy and love in our hearts, Stepping Stone outreach staff work to meet the needs of people from a harm reduction point of view by treating people with respect and dignity and most of all without judgment. Stepping Stone will always provide abstinence-based treatment at our Residential and Non-Residential facilities, rest assured! We are happy to be working a program that understands the complexities of human behaviors and seeks to provide services to individuals with differing needs, or until a bed becomes available.
