Dear Friend –
I am not going to mince words—the federal funding we rely on faces imminent and severe threats.
85% of Stepping Stone’s funding comes from federal grants, primarily Medicaid/Medi-Cal. Any reduction in this funding could be catastrophic for our programs and the individuals in our community who depend on them.
Just this week the Trump administration proposed dramatic cuts to Medicaid, jeopardizing the funding source we rely on to provide residential treatment for Stepping Stone’s clients. Additional federal actions continue to threaten funding for nonprofits like ours that support LGBTQ+ communities, individuals living with HIV, and people experiencing homelessness.

We’ve Faced Challenges Before—We’re Still Here and Stronger Than Ever
Stepping Stone was born out of necessity in 1976 because LGBTQ+ folks were being excluded from other recovery, healthcare, and housing programs. We responded by building our own safe space where our community could heal, thrive, and celebrate recovery. Decades before anyone mentioned the term “DEI,” we made inclusion our core value. Now, with new challenges to our funding, we’re not backing down—we’re doubling down.

Our board and leadership team are actively working with healthcare partners, community foundations, and policy experts to navigate these challenges strategically. But we need your support to ensure we can maintain our vital services without interruption.
Now’s the time to show that we take care of our own. Your donation helps us keep every door open, every service running, and every client supported—no matter what. Regardless of background, gender identity, orientation, or race – EVERYONE is welcome in our house of healing. Let’s show the world that our community stands together, stronger than ever.
Now is the time to stand with us: Help us protect our community and ensure Stepping Stone can continue its life-saving work. Every donation—no matter the size—makes a difference.
Together, we have provided essential services for five decades. Together, we will continue to save lives.
In strength and solidarity,Andrew Picard
